Children and good oral health habits

Oral health is determined by good hygiene habits that must be acquired at an early age.

If from an early age we teach our children to follow an optimal hygiene routine for their teeth, when they are older they will enjoy better health in their mouths and teeth, avoiding serious periodontal diseases.

First of all, it is important to debunk the myth that baby teeth are not important, so their care is not relevant.

The truth is that, despite the fact that the milk teeth are not permanent and begin to emerge after the baby’s first 6 months of life, the gums do remain over time, so taking care of general oral hygiene is key .

Generally, children do not usually have serious problems in their gums, but as has been shown there is an increase in these in adulthood, surely, due to the lack of attention during childhood.

How to instill a good habit of oral hygiene in children?

Children are like sponges that do what they see and learn very quickly. Therefore, if we want our sons and daughters to acquire a habit of proper dental hygiene, we can start by brushing our teeth together with them.

In this way, in addition to detecting how to do it, we can help them and control that they do it correctly.

Be an example for your children and brush your teeth with them

The concern that we usually have to correct the position of our teeth makes that, sometimes, we forget the relationship that orthodontics has with other aspects related to oral health: the health of our gums.

That is, if you have periodontitis, you can wear orthodontics but first you must undergo a treatment against the disease and maintain optimal levels of oral hygiene, something that you should take extreme advantage of when your teeth support orthodontics. Therefore, visits to the dentist for check-ups should be made more frequently.

At the very least, they should brush their teeth a couple of times a day. After breakfast and before going to sleep.

A child’s mouth is not the same as an adult’s, so it is very important to use an age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste. Consult your dentist.

Include fruits and vegetables in your diet. If it is true that this advice is not directly limited to oral hygiene such as brushing, it is truly relevant for your mouth that you have a balanced diet avoiding excess sugars.

Take your children to see their dentist at least a couple of times a year. This advice acquires greater relevance if the child is in a process of changing teeth.
