Indeed, the WHO recommends the use of fluoride toothpaste to prevent cavities. The organization recommends brushing your teeth with toothpaste containing between 1,000 and 1,500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, twice a day.
Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acids and promoting remineralization.
Children from 6 months to 3 years old should brush their teeth (with and without help) at least twice a day. The toothpaste, the size of a grain of rice, should lightly coat the bristles of the toothbrush and have a fluoride concentration of 1,000 ppm. From three to six years old, the amount of toothpaste should be the size of a pea, and the fluoride concentration should remain at 1,000 ppm. The toothpaste should be spat out after brushing and the mouth should not be rinsed with water. For children over six years old and adults, the amount of toothpaste should be the size of a chickpea, and the fluoride concentration increases to 1,450 ppm, according to the Illustrated Guide published by the Council of Dentists, “Biofilm Control in the Child Population”.
Regular tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste is the main non-professional intervention to prevent cavities, but the preventive effect of fluoride varies depending on the different concentrations of fluoride in the toothpaste.
The use of fluoride mouthwash is always a complement to brushing. This type of mouthwash can be prescribed in a low fluoride concentration (0.05%) and high frequency (daily) or a higher concentration (0.2%) weekly. After using a mouthwash, the mouth should not be rinsed with water. In patients with disabilities, fluoride mouthwashes are only indicated for those who are able to control the swallowing reflex. Researchers have confirmed the role of fluoride mouthwashes in controlling cavities, and it has also been observed that these types of fluoride rinses stop non-cavitated lesions (those that are not yet visible on the enamel). The combination of fluoride, calcium, phosphates, and xylitol in the YOTUEL and YOTUEL microbiome toothpaste range protects the enamel, remineralises it, and prevents cavities
